Milagro Cinemas to host special screenings of award-winning documentary ‘The Strike’
Milagro Cinemas will host special screenings of The Strike, a powerful documentary about Norwalk resident Jack Morris and his historic fight to end solitary confinement in U.S. prisons. The screenings are scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 8, at 2 pm and 4:30 pm at the Norwalk theater.
The Strike tells the true story of Morris, who endured years in solitary confinement at Pelican Bay Prison. Morris launched a hunger strike that galvanized the prison population and drew nationwide support, ultimately leading to reforms that ended the use of solitary confinement as punishment in California and influenced policy changes across the country.
The event will feature appearances by Morris, as well as key figures in the film, including Dolores Canales and Michael Saavedra. Special guests include Norwalk Mayor Margarita Rios, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, and the film’s producers, Lucas Guilkey and Joe Bill Munoz. PBS Broadcasting representatives will also be in attendance.
Milagro Cinemas President Moctesuma Esparza, a noted film producer, emphasized the importance of bringing this story to Norwalk. “It is a privilege for Milagro Cinemas’ Community Support Program to show the story of one man’s life and how he stood against a horrible suffering, and to bring this story to Norwalk for the community to engage and support a local hero,” Esparza said.
Directed by Lucas Guilkey, The Strike has garnered national attention for its compelling narrative and has won awards, including the top honor at the San Quentin Film Festival, where films about prison reform are judged by incarcerated men. The documentary will also be nationally broadcast on PBS’ Independent Lens on Feb. 3, 2025.
Tickets for the event are available online at www.milagrocinemas.com. Community members are encouraged to attend and celebrate Morris’s courage and the documentary’s spotlight on prison reform.
The screenings promise to be an inspiring opportunity for Norwalk residents and visitors to engage with a story of resilience, activism, and the power of collective action.
