Rep. Sanchez responds to Court reject of Trump census order

NORWALK - Rep. Linda Sanchez, Norwalk’s representative in Congress, issued the following statement after a three-judge panel in New York rejected the Trump Administration’s efforts to exclude undocumented immigrants from the census’s apportionment count. 

“Today’s decision by the Southern District of New York is a win for a lawful 2020 Census and a loss for Trump’s hurtful partisan politics.

“The United States Constitution is clear: the Census must occur every 10 years, and every person living in the United States must be counted. Period. President Trump’s attempt to not recognize undocumented individuals as ‘people’ was a clear violation and I am glad the court upheld our laws. 

“While we recognize this victory, there is still much more to be done in order to ensure that every person is counted. The Census is facing unprecedented challenges in reaching the hardest to count communities.  And we know that President Trump and his Administration will continue to try to undermine our laws for partisan gain. We need to keep encouraging our family, friends and neighbors to fill out the Census and know their information is protected.

“I also continue to call on the Senate to pass the HEROES Act, which includes a provision to extend the Census. This would give the Census Bureau enough time to complete a fair and accurate count and deliver complete apportionment and redistricting data. The people of California, and people across America, deserve nothing less.”
