Norwalk approves new 'Fitness Village' at Imperial and Bloomfield
By Alex Dominguez
NORWALK – In its first official meeting, the newly formed Norwalk City Council unanimously approved project plans for a major dining and entertainment complex.
The project, which will sit on the border of Norwalk and Santa Fe Springs at the northwest corner of Imperial Highway and Bloomfield Avenue, was described as a “new gateway” by city staff at Tuesday’s meeting.
The promenade-style complex - currently being called the Norwalk Fitness Village - will include a 37,000 square foot gym (LA Fitness) and two drive through food establishments (Chick-Fil-A and Panera Bread), along with shops which have yet to be announced.
There will also be a small stage available for small scale entertainment and community use.
Currently, Chick-Fil-A looks to be the most prominent building, as art renderings show it standing on the direct corner of the location.
The plans for the fitness village passed with a 4-0 vote, with Vice Mayor Leonard Shryock making the motion and Councilmember Margarita Rios seconding.
Councilmember Jennifer Perez – who formerly served on the Planning Commission - abstained from the item at the request of the City attorney, due to her involvement with the Planning Commission vote on the same item that took place earlier this year.
The Norwalk Fitness Village project was approved by the Planning Commission during the recent election, and was officially announced by Perez at a candidate meet and greet event.
