Norwalk man pleads guilty to abusing dog
NORWALK – A Norwalk man pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges after he severely beat a pit bull that had urinated and defecated in his car, authorities announced.
The attack occurred on the 13000 block of Kalnor Avenue in Norwalk. It’s not clear when the incident took place but prosecutors said Efrain Rodriguez lifted the 7-month-old dog and twice threw him to the ground.
A Good Samaritan who witnessed the abuse called police.
The dog, named Bubba, suffered injuries to his hind legs. X-rays taken at SEAACA showed prior and recent evidence of abuse, including broken ribs and other fractures.
Rodriguez was taken into custody for animal cruelty. An arrest warrant was issued after he failed to appear in court for his arraignment.
Rodriguez eventually pleaded guilty to animal cruelty charges and was sentenced to probation with time served and 160 hours of community service. He also cannot own or care for any animals for 10 years.
Bubba was treated at SEAACA and was adopted by a rescue group.
“In this scenario, because of the Good Samaritans who took action and notified law enforcement, Bubba has been able to get a fresh start,” said SEAACA executive director Denise Woodside. “If it wasn’t for the call, Bubba may still be in the same abusive situation.”
