Homeless man killed by garbage truck driven by Norwalk man

LONG BEACH — A 57-year-old homeless man who was lying in an alley in Long Beach was run over by a garbage truck and died at the scene, authorities said Wednesday.

The 62-year-old driver from Norwalk remained at the scene and cooperated with police. He was later released from the scene.

The death took place at around 1 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Del Rey Court and Anaheim Street, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Police said the driver of a privately owned garbage truck was backing up on Del Rey Court when he ran over the man.

The name of the deceased was withheld pending notification of next of kin.
