NORWALK — Patricia “Pat” Walker celebrated her 100th birthday last month. Pat is a life member of Soroptimist International, which is also celebrating its centennial anniversary this year.

The founding Soroptimists had a wry sense of humor. In the report of the Soroptimist International of Norwalk Charter Party in 1953, the historian said “DRESS WAS OPTIONAL.” Pat’s name is on the charter as one of the original 29 members.

For their first service project, they purchased a U.S. flag for a Brownie troop which cost $15.

Much has changed since the club Soroptimist International of Norwalk was organized in 1953. Norwalk Soroptimist club merged with Santa Fe Springs Soroptimist club three years ago. During the club’s early history, members introduced themselves with a slogan. Pat’s slogan was:“Get off your rocker and come to Walker’s.”

Pat’s family business was Walker Furniture Store in Norwalk. Her husband, John, was a member of Norwalk Rotary Club.

Pat held many leadership positions during the Soroptimist club’s history. According to the 1956 annual report, the “biggest thing that happened was on October 18, 1956, we unanimously pledged our support to the Soroptimist Village Foundation.” Sixty-five years later, Soroptimist Village still operates at 12700 Foster Road, in Norwalk, as a Section 8 project, providing housing to low-income seniors.

In 1965, Pat co-chaired the Ways & Means Committee, with her friend Hazel headed up a Rummage Sale, the Salad Luncheon, and encouraged personal fundraising projects.

Soroptimist International of Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs treasures Pat’s continued Soroptimist membership and appreciates her 68 years of philanthropy and friendship.
