Norwalk approves two new vehicles for Senior Nutrition program

NORWALK - City Council approved the procurement of two vehicles for the Senior Nutrition Program on Tuesday, thus opening an additional two new routes.

Since 1984, the Los Angeles County Workforce Development, Aging Community Services (WDACS) has provided funding to provide hot meals at the Social Services and Senior Centers, including meals delivered to home-bound frail, elderly, and disabled residents - also known as the Senior Nutrition Program - to the City’s senior citizen population.

On June 18 of last year, City Council approved a direct contract with the WDACS to have City staff to accept and administer the Elderly Nutrition Program.

The Senior Nutrition Program currently services 130 home-bound seniors amongst three routes, with an additional 61 seniors on a waiting list (reflected before the outbreak of COVID-19).

The two new vehicles - two Ford F150 trucks outfitted with a holding oven and refrigeration system feature – will help alleviate the excess need.

Cost for the trucks amounts to $105,880, although the City will be reimbursed by WDACS in the amount of $105,808, per staff reports.
